The MP Birla Planetarium in Kolkata is a well known and prominent destination that has made tremendous amount of contribution to India’s space science. The institution came into existence on 29th September, 1962 and was officially opened to the public on 2nd July, 1963 after an inaugural address by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.
Birla planetarium is the first of its kind in whole of India and the most prominent one in the entire Asia. With several important projects put forward by the planetarium, it has proved to be an asset for the common people and students alike. The ever so mysterious world of space is explored best at this well equipped destination. Some famous astronomical projects put forward includes Astro- physics, Celestial Mechanics, History of astronomy, Mythology concerning the stars, Eclipses and several other celestial events.
It is located close to other tourist attractions like Victoria Memorial at the hub of city. Program for children of all ages are conducted here along with a free evening course on topics like spectroscopy, telescopes, Droppler effect, refraction, galaxies, hubble diagram, peculiar extragalactic phenomenon, eclipses, the sun, stellar classification and several other enlightening topics. It also offer courses for students and its well equipped facilities include a telescope named Celestron C-14, STD CCD Camera and Solar Filters.
