Dakshineshwar Temple is a sacred 19th century complex and one of the largest in Kolkata which is also a prominent pilgrimage destination for Hindu devotees. Kolkata possesses deep cultural and religious roots apparent in several temples & shrines located all over the city and Dhakineshwar Temple is the most famous one amongst them.
The temple is chiefly dedicated to Goddess Kali. Located at a distance of about 20 kilometers north of Kolkata city, it was established by Rani Rasmoni in the year 1847. Sri Ramakrishna, the renowned spiritual personality also spent some time here and the room where he lived has been now converted into a museum. Devotees of Shiva, Kali, Radha, and Krishna throng the temple in large numbers all through the year.
The man shrine dedicated to Goddesss Kali is known as Navaratna Temple and surrounded by 12 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Rising to a height of 100 feet, the temple architecture is in conventional Navaratna style. The temple is adorned with an altogether new look during the annual Kali puja. Hundreds of devotees visit the temple during the auspicious occasion and pay their homage to the deity. A must visit for everyone touring Kolkata.
